Edit: the app launched and Is down- I have the initial apology video in a post here and Iām working on getting a full archive of their TikTok up ASAP. Iām letting the rest of this post remain since I do still stand by most of it and also donāt like altering things already in circulation.
Warning for criticism and what Iād consider some harsh to outright mean words:
So Iāve just been made aware of the project known of as ālore.fmā and Iām not a fan for multiple reasons. For one this āaccessibilityā tool complicates the process of essentially just using a screen reader (something native to all I phones specifically because this is a proposed IOS app) in utterly needless and inaccessible ways. From what I have been seeing on Reddit they have been shielding themselves (or fans of the project have been defending them) with this claim of being an accessibility tool as well to which is infuriating for so many reasons.
I plan to make a longer post explaining why this is a terrible idea later but Iāll keep it short for tonight with my main three criticisms and a few extras:
1. Your service requires people to copy a url for a fic then open your app then paste it into your app and click a button then wait for your audio to be prepared to use. This is needlessly complicating a process that exists on IOS already and can be done IN BROWSER using an overlay that you can fully control the placement of.
2. This is potentially killing your own fandom if it catches on with the proposed target market of xreader smut enjoyers because of only needing the link as mentioned above. You donāt have to open a fic to get a link this the author may potentially not even get any hits much less any other feedback. At least when you download a pdf you leave a hit: the download button is on the page with the fic for a reason. Fandom is a self sustaining eco system and many authors get discouraged and post less/even stop writing all together if they get low interaction.
3. Maybe we shouldnāt put something marketed as turning smut fanfic into audio books on the IOS App Store right now. Maybe with KOSA thatās a bad idea? Just maybe? Sarcasm aside we could see fan fiction be under even more legal threat if minors use this to listen to the content we know they all consume via sites like ao3 (even if we ask them not to) and are caught with it. Auditory content has historically been considered much more obscene/inappropriate than written content: this is a recipe for a disaster and more internet regulations we are trying to avoid.
I also have many issues with the fact that this is obviously redistributing fanfiction (thus violating the copyright we hold over our words and our plots) and removing control the author should have over their content and digital footprint. Then there is the fact that even though the creator on TikTok SAYS you can email to have your fic āexcludedā based on the way the demo works (pasting a link) Iām gonna assume thatās just to cover her ass/is utter bullshit. I know thatās harsh but if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck itās probably a duck.
I am all for women in stem- Iāve BEEN a woman in Stem- but this is not a cool girl boss moment. This is someone naive enough to think this will go over well at best or many other things (security risks especially) at worst.
In conclusion for tonight: I hope this person is a troll but there is enough hype and enough paid for web domains that I donāt think thatās the case. There are a litany of reasons every fanfic reader and writer should be against something like this existing and Iāll outline them all in several other posts later.
Do not email their opt out email address there is no saying what is actually happening with that data and it is simply not worth the risks it could bring up. I hate treating seemingly well meaning people like potential cyber criminals but Iāve seen enough shit by now that itās better to be safe than sorry. Youāre much safer just locking all your fics to account only. I havenāt yet but I may in the future if that is the only option.
If anyone wants a screen reader tutorial and a walk through of my free favorites as well as the native IOS screen reader I can post that later as well. Sorry for the heavy content I know itās not my normal fare.

Final fitting of the dress before sewing it up.

There are a million pins but it is pinned along the sewing lines so that's not an issue. I wanted to make sure the hems were all in the right place.
I'm also very pleased with the sleeves

Again, just pinned, and not gathered down properly, but they are exactly what she wanted.
And the bottom of the bodice will have piping

While the top will have a berthe that will be kinda like this

And if we have time, there will be a bonnet that matches.
This has been a 2 year project and I have learned so much!

"Why did Tears of the Kingdom have a development cycle just as long as Breath of the Wild's even though it reused so many assets?" is a question that I think fundamentally misunderstands how modern game design works
It assumes that the team does something like all sit down, develop the physics engine, then they can move on to the overworld map, then they can move on to making the cutscenes, etc. and when you think about that for just a second it becomes obviously absurd. Developing a physics engine, writing dialogue, creating textures, designing puzzles, and so on are all different disciplines that different specialists work on in parallel and in cooperation
What probably actually happened is a lot of the artists, engine devs, and so on put a lot less time into the project, before/while working on a bunch of different projects at Nintendo (quite possibly including the engine and art for the next Zelda game), and they also probably didn't need to get Monolith Soft to help design the overworld. Meanwhile, the puzzle designers, writers, and a lot of the rest of the team have to do just as much work as they did for Breath of the Wild (or more!), and so it's not that surprising that it took just as long
(Disclaimer that I don't know for certain that this is how it happened internally at Nintendo, and short of interviewing the devs I don't think there's any way to find out. The credits won't help because close to all of the people who moved on to other teams either worked on TotK for part of the development and/or had their work ported over from BotW. This is just my understanding of how modern AAA game development works)

When I first got into Kirby, I didn't expect to like, actually get into it. I thought it'd be like any other hyperfixation I'd had up to that point, that it would go away within a few months and I'd never think about it again.
Given I was so deeply in denial, I didn't care about being fully accurate and had some stuff that was really goofy and/or underdeveloped and unexplained. Stuff I'd made up to just work for the limited time I would be there.
Still, I came up with a few headcanons that I got attached to, and when I started realizing this was here to stay, I still chose to be stubborn and had to work backwards to keep these stupid headcanons, but adapt them into something a bit more fitting and polished.
It led to some cool stuff, like for example, my orbs aren't very magical, this was something I had settled on early on. But after I got invested, I had to think about what that actually meant and the implications of it like, how can they do this without magic? And what about that? What about this canon thing, how do I explain it?
I found decent enough explanations for all of these. But as a result of my unserious beginnings and continued stubborness, now I get really embarrassed at the time to actually talk about my headcanons and the stuff I've come up with.
Because what do you mean your Galacta Knight is half-dragon?

I didn't know he was a dragon at the time though. so it doesn't#show in his design a whole lot. when you look at his dragon dad he does look a lot like him. but said dragon dad also does not look like#a dragon at all. not a scaley reptile typical one. so that's Another layer to my problem#my thoughts on orb wings and horns have since changed. theoretically I could totally make gk a normal orb now. but#i also decided that the only reason he Specifically can use magic it's because of this half-dragonness š#another show of him being the exception. he's always stood out as odd#so there's actually no going back. i'd also have to get rid of his fuzz and who'd want that#text post

as a female engineering student i am so grateful to have representation like poppy li. too many āwoman in stemā characters are, on top of being really smart, also really cool and really pretty but POPPY is a piece of shit, awkward as hell, egotistical little gremlin addicted to candy, power, and validation. she is the smartest person at mythic quest and also the weirdest person youāve ever met. i love her so much

not sure what the hypothesis is and idk what itās like for kids these days but just weighing in if you grew up using macs in the 00s your tech problem solving skills got honed bc nothing on planet earth was compatible with your computer. so you had to spend hours researching and figuring out the sketchiest shit recommended by guys on niche forums all so you could play some stupid game your friends were playing on the worst emulator ever

honestly, I feel like Dave McKean's work elevated Neil Gaiman way more than the other way around and we don't distribute credit for that properly. I truly don't think--and, critically, never have thought--the early Sandman writing was so good that it would have gotten far without the heavy hitting art lending it such an air of respectability. McKean's work is so visually distinct still, let alone 20 years ago, let alone 30. "This is serious art for serious stories for serious people," those mixed media paintings say when they're surrounded by pen and ink put out on a brutal schedule. "I am a serious person with sophisticated tastes," the buyer says, given permission to be pretentious and smug as hell, which is very alluring to many people.

How do you know when you should come up with a generalized solution for a problem, or just make the problem impossible via (for example) strict level design?
It really depends on how important the problem is, how often we expect it to come up during development, and how often we expect the players to encounter it.
General solutions require significantly more effort than one-off single fixes - a one-off single fix requires only testing that one case, while general solutions require general testing from many different angles and locations. However, general solutions can be a better solution than, say, a dozen (or more) one-off single fixes. When you have to fix the same kind of problem many times over, a general solution becomes more appealing.
The main issue with general solutions is the potential to become cursed problems - the general solution works most of the time, but exceptions to the general solution keep cropping up over the course of development. This causes the generalized solution to end up costing way more time and resources than it was initially scoped for. After fixing exception after exception, it can end up costing even more than building many one-off solutions would have. I've had one of the bigger systems I built turn into one of these before, and I have a lot of thoughts on how to identify and fix these kind of cursed general solutions.
